For His Own Chariots

My brother called me today and told me he joined the National Guard. He’s already been to Iraq twice in the Army and been shot. Not harmed, but shot in the body armor. ~i think he won some lottery~ And this military thing just isn’t as cool as everyone seems to think it is, so I had some questions about it. I do not want him in Iraq.
Supposedly because he’s on the Gulf Coast, he’s not going to be sent to Iraq. Something about hurricane season. But I don’t believe anything they say, so we’ll see.
My conclusion based on that conversation is that there’s blame enough for all the king’s men in this Katrina thing, but this is the Corps of Engineers’ baby. They screwed the pooch. Then everyone else got in with ‘em in some kind of Incompetents Anonymous cluster fuck. The worst thing about it is shit like this is happening all the time to the point that inhumanity and incompetence are the result of our tax dollars.
And nobody cares.
But I do. That body that they bought contains my brother.
Putting aside important debates about wars, just or unjust, and about the military ~revisionist?~ tradition of the United States:
All government is incompetent, but this government is outrageous. Like a fucking Broadway musical. The current king is not worth serving.

When I took the “Katrina Tour” in New Orleans last year, the local guide emphasized how badly the Corps of Engineers had fucked it all up. I thought that Blackwater had hurricane duty now, in case looters need to be shot.
