This one happens due to the television show Bonanza. I saw it the other day, and it actually it was a DVD I was watching, but it was a regular show beforehand years ago. When I was watching it the fact of calling the bigger guy Hoss was a little puzzling. Just because he was bigger than them didn’t really make sense because I know a lot of guys that are that big or bigger, and none of them go by Hoss. Even though they are very big they may only be called Burgers or perhaps one of them is called Tiny sometimes, but never Hoss.

Then I remembered the restaurant Bonanza that I used to work for and it all clicked that I bet the same people who ran the show also owned the restaurant. Then the strategy was apparent–if we put a really big guy on the show and people like him as their favorite character, it will give good feelings between large people and the word Bonanza. That will help them to attract people who like to eat, and that’s the kind of customer that works well for restaurants.

I was still a bit curious why they later changed the restaurant name to Ponderosa after the place where all the Bonanza guys lived. I was thinking that those guys probably got lonely living out there on that Ponderosa with very few chicks around. It probably got a little weird sometimes. They guy who made up the show Little House on the Prarie made a smart move to get the one guy from Bonanza to play the dad on that show. He devised a way for the dad to live in a house on the prarie where it was just him and all girls besides him. He probably would never do a show again where he was going to be stuck out in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of dudes.

Consider that the lesson learned here.

Hoss was a mean motherfucker with a mind like a child. You just knew that if he got pissed off it would be like the Incredible Hulk coming out of his simple-minded body. Brother Adam was just a grouchy dude - good riddance to him.

I heard Hoss was Steinbeck’s inspiration for “Of Mice and Men”
